The Beast
Shannon Hugman
She woke up in her new bed, stomach-turning. Luxury surrounded her. But she felt hollow, and her heart felt poor. Today, she was invited to breakfast, brunch, actually. Sprawling tables of food, golden cutlery, candlesticks and teapots waiting for her requests. She was their guest. Yet, the empty feeling persisted despite her full belly.
Until she found the library, she found her people, fellow writers and readers there. Books had always been her escape. In this new city, it was no different. She found peace at the library by listening to the words of others. She discovered her voice and let the sounds out. She fell in love with herself. And, not just the pleasant parts; through expression, she learned to love the beast within, which broke the spell.
