The Face In The Dark
Thameema Sharaf
As soon as Mr. Oliver regained his consciousness, he began running. He didn't care for the directions, he just wanted to get out of the woods alive. A flash back of what happened that night made him shiver. But nothing stopped him.
Soon enough, he could see a faint hint of light across the huge pine trees. He ran as fast as his legs allowed him to. As he approached, more lights and smoke from chimneys were visible. He was not entirely convinced of his safety as he couldn't see any humans. It felt odd to see such a small, peculiar looking village right in the middle of the woods.
"what are you looking for ? I haven't seen you here before". The sudden conversation from behind, scared him. Mr. Oliver could almost feel his heart stop entirely. Taking a deep breath, he turned around and saw a woman clad in saree covering her head along with her face.
He immediately asked her for a telephone to make a call to the police station. The woman asked him to follow her to a nearby shop. "May I ask you what the problem is ?" asked the woman.
Mr. Oliver then narrated the encounter he had with the student and the watchman, whose faces were blank with no features at all. The woman froze in her tracks. Mr. Oliver said "I am telling the truth. Both of them had no eyes, no ears, no nose, eyebrows, nothing at all !"
The woman turned to face him and at that moment a soft breeze made the woman's saree fall from the head revealing her face. Mr. Oliver had the third shock of that night. The woman was one among them !
His legs started making the move even before his brain could process it. He ran for his life. The woman suddenly shouted at him from behind "but I don't understand, why are you so scared ?".
Mr. Oliver ignored her. As he passed a turning, there was a mirror fixed for blind spotting. His body suddenly jolted to a stop, the woman's last words echoing in his ears loudly.
He went close to the mirror and stared at his reflection in utter disbelief. "No, this can't be !"
Mr. Oliver lay unconscious again for the second time that night.
